Residential Soil Health Outreach

Available through December 2015

Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District will offer free soil test and "4R" (the Right fertilizer source, at the Right Rate, at the Right Time, with the Right Placement) literature for residential lawn owners. Soil tests will be distributed by Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District. These tests will be offered to determine soil nutrient levels and fertilizer requirements. All soil test results will be reviewed with participants when received by the Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District Staff. After a participant receives soil test results they will be able to compare their current soil nutrient levels with recommended ideal levels enabling them to more effectively manage their property. Community Agriculture Appreciation Breakfast

Tuesday - March 24, 2015 - 7:00am to 11:00am
The breakfast will be held at the Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District office located at 85 E Iron Ave, Dover, OH. Please join us to celebrate National Agriculture Week. Enjoy all-you-can-eat breakfast for a donation. Donations will be used to support our programs. For more information contact us at 330-339-7976.

2015 Tuscarawas SWCD Scholarship

Applications must be received by 4:00pm on May 1, 2015

The Tuscarawas Soil & Water Conservation District is pleased to announce that it is offering a $500 scholarship to assist graduating seniors with the pursuit of a college, university or technical school degree. The applicant must be a Tuscarawas County resident or graduating from a Tuscarawas County High School. Applicants for the scholarship need to be pursuing a degree in the fields of Agriculture or Conservation of Natural Resources. Examples of some eligible degrees include Ag Engineering, Aquatic Ecology, Biological Sciences, Conservation Planning, Environmental Science, Forestry, Soils, Turf or Wildlife management.

A link for the application can be found below. Applications can also be picked up at the Tuscarawas SWCD office at 85 E. Iron Ave, Dover OH between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Check in your high school guidance office for an application . The deadline for application submission is May 1, 2015. All applications will be reviewed by a committee. The top three applicants will be interviewed by the committee prior to final selection.

2015 Tuscarawas SWCD Coloring Contest

The Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District is pleased to annouce its annual coloring contest. The theme for the 2015 Tuscarawas SWCD coloring contest is "Local Heros your Hardworking Pollinators".

The Tuscarawas SWCD Coloring Contest is open to all Kindergartener students living in Tuscarawas County. The first place winner will be awarded a $25 Gift card. The artist of the second place poster will receive a $15 gift card. Anyone interested may contact the Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District office located at 85 E. Iron Ave., Dover OH or call 330-339-7976 for additional information.

Promoting Cover Crops through Grant Program

2015 Tuscarawas Soil & Water Conservation District Cover Crop Program Cover crops are a conservation priority, due to the potential of erosion and sediment loading from corn silage and soybean fields. The Tuscarawas SWCD is sponsoring the following program: • Cover Crops • No-till drills are available for rent from Tuscarawas SWCD • 200 acre cap per participant based on a ranking system • $13.00 / acre cost share available • Applications available on our website: www.tuscsoil.com or by calling our office at 330 339-7976. • This program is open to Tuscarawas County participants and acreage must be within Tuscarawas County. • Sign up is now through July 1, 2015. Ag in the City 2015

Friday, June 12, 2015

It’s time to experience a day on the farm with your family! The event will be held Friday, June 12 from 5pm – 8:30pm at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia. Numerous children’s activities will be on site including a Kiddie Tractor Pull, Pony rides, Face Painting, All-A-Flutter Butterfly Exhibit, and an Archery Activity. There will be a food stand provided. Educational displays will include Tuscarawas County Beekeepers, Farm Bureau, Forestry and many others. Please read our newsletter for more details

The committee is comprised of representatives from the following agencies: Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District, Farm Credit, OSU Extension, Agland Co-op, and many community members. Our goal is to showcase agriculture and the families that make it all happen. We strive to connect farmers with the public and provide a personal experience for learning and fellowship.
