We have been raising money since our first chicken barbecue in 2005. We are currently at $74,401.78. Download our event schedule and place it on your fridge. We hope to see you soon! NJC Events and Summer Programming 2008 Summer Children's ProgramSummer 2008 - This summer we will be offering activities on Tuesday and Thursdays. Participants will need to register at the office for programs occurring on Tuesdays and Thursdays by calling 330.339.7976 and fill out a emergency contact information sheet for their child if not accompanied by an adult during the activity. Children under the age of 7 will need to be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs offered below. All programs will have a $3.00 participation fee applied. A maximum family charge of nine dollars/activity will be administered. Funds collected will benefit the Norma Johnson Center’s mission. Summer Childrens Program - Interacting with NatureTuesday's 10AM to Noon - June 10; Blue Bird & Tree Swallow Observation : The bluebirds and tree swallows are alive and nesting at the NJC. Come explore the bird boxes and help us keep track of the baby birds at the Center. June 17; “There’s Coal in them There Hills!”: The NJC has a history of coal removal. Explore reclaimed and non-reclaimed land sites at the center. Explore an old coal pit and see what we can find. Learn how Norma implemented her ideas to bring the land back to its natural landscape. June 24;Creek Exploration: Have you ever wondered what lives in the creek? Explore the creek habitat located on the Johnson Loop. July 8; Tree ID, Peek-a-Boo Can You Guess Who?: Have you ever wondered what kind of tree is growing in the woods around you? This adventure will have you checking out the trees at the NJC and learning about specific trees, their bark, leaves and we use them everyday. July 15; Pond Dipping: Have you ever wondered what is living in your pond or wetland? Come to the NJC and check out the nymphs, water bugs, salamanders, crayfish, and frogs up close and personal. July 22; Monarch Madness: Explore milkweed plants around the center trying to find monarch larvae. Once found we will talk about the process monarch butterflies and others go through. July 29; Which Way Did They Go?: Explore the NJC and track the animals that live at our center. Participants will be looking for tracks, scat, homes and bones. Make your own track stamp and plaster paris footprint. August 5; Catch of the Day! Fishing at the NJC: Fish the ponds at the NJC to see what lives in the water while catch and releasing our fantastic finds. Aug. 12; Dragonfly and Damselflies: What is that flying by? What is the difference between the two? Using a guide from ODNR identify the dragonflies and damselflies that live at the NJC wetland. Summer Childrens Program - Craft DaysThursday's 10AM to Noon - June 12; NJC Clubhouse: Come to the NJC and help make a permanent shelter for you to revisit all year long. We will be building a NJC clubhouse for visitors to explore. June 19; Tye Dye: Bring up to 3 items you would like to tye dye. The items need to be pre-washed and 100% cotton. NJC t-shirts will also be available to purchase and tye dye. June 26; Bird Feeders: The NJC has several types of birds that live at the center. Several types of birdfeeders will be available to build which will bring birds to your backyard. July 10; Garden Pedal stool: Your garden pedal stool can be made out of several types of recyclable material. For example an old mixing bowl painted up can easily be used to make a new seat in your garden. July 17; Garden Stone: Create your own stone for the garden by using concrete and your imagination. July 24; Paper Making: Learn how to make your own paper by using old newspapers and constructions paper. July 31; Nature Art: Making creatures and decorations by painting rocks and using your imagination to create a world of wonder. Other natural products will be used to use your creative edge. August 7; Nature Photography: Participants will make a nature journal. Stopping to take the time to capture a moment…participants will be sent on a photo scavenger hunt at the NJC. Bring your own camera. Aug. 14; Make Your Own Worm Compost Jar: Have you ever wondered what to do with your food scraps that can be composted? Join us and make your very own compost jar. Worms included. Summer Children's Program- Saturday SpecialsSaturday's 9AM to Noon - Bringing our weekly children’s program to you on the weekend. Join us and enjoy three activities in three hours. Cost will be $3.00/person or $9.00 max for families. See above for program descriptions. June 21; Bluebirds and Tree Swallows, Creek Exploration and Tye Dye July 19; Tree ID, Pond Dipping and Garden Stepping Stones Aug. 16; Catch of the Day (fishing), Tracking and Worm Compost Picnic By the PondSummer 2008 - As the day winds down enjoy a picnic with your family at the Norma Johnson Center. Community members are encouraged to bring their picnic around 6:00 and meet at the picnic shelter on Conservation Drive. After dinner, the NJC staff will offer program. June 28: A Night at the NJC; featuring Owls, Frogs and Bats Attendees will hear about different Ohio nocturnal socialites. July 26: Scavenger Hunt; Taking a casual stroll throughout the center will reveal several items on our scavenger hunt list. Enjoy taking the time to look around and experience the NJC in the evening. August 23: Game Night; Families are encouraged to work together and have fun while challenging themselves to overcome different obstacles. Parchute Pop, Group Juggling, Pinata, Frisbee Golf and lots more. September 27: Fall Night Hike; At dusk go into the woods of the NJC and experience night life at its best. NJC staff will lead a group through the woods and give participants a glimpse into NJC night life. Wildflower HikeJune 7, 2008 - Explore the trails at the NJC and check out the wildflowers along the trails of the Conservation Loop. We will met at the picnic shelter on Conservation Drive at 10 AM. |

Plant Sale Order Form and Descriptions NJC Chicken Barbeque Saturday, October 6, 2007 - This fundraiser benefits the Norma Johnson Center Restroom Project. Dinners will go on sale at 11:30am and will sell until we are sold out. The chicken dinner includes a chicken half, potato salad, baked beans, bread, and a beverage. All dinners are $8.00. The barbeque will be held at the Brandywine Center located down the road from the NJC on Old State Route 39. NJC Fall Fest Saturday, October 27, 2007 - Bring the kids to the NJC Fall Fest for a fun family night. It is a great time to enjoy all the sights, sounds and scents that fall has to offer. Activities will take place at the picnic shelter on Conservation Drive. If it is raining we will be in the back of the yellow pole barn on State Route 39. Activities will include: Pumpkin Painting, Scarecrow Making, Pine Cone Bird Feeders, Fall Hike (weather depending), Literacy at the Wetland, Leaf Pressing, Fall Scavenger Hunt (weather depending). Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Program Fridays, March 28 through May 9, 2008 - Group will meet on each Friday. The Norma Johnson Center and Tusc SWCD will be working with OSU extension to put on an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Program (OCVN) on Fridays from March 28 to May 9, 2008. The OCVN program is designed to meet the natural resource education needs of the citizens of Ohio. Its purpose is to train volunteers and utilize their expertise to teach people more about Ohio’s natural resources and their importance to our quality of life. OCVN participants will provide services to their local natural resource organizations so that their activities and programs can be more effectively and efficiently delivered to Ohio’s public. Partnering with other organizations the program will train individuals as Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist. The program will consist of 40 hours of training which will cover a wide range of natural resource topics, passing of an exam, 40 hours of volunteer work all completed within the first year. To recertify each year the participant will need to complete 20 hours of volunteer work and 8 hours of advanced training. The program cost will be $125.00. Earth Day Clean UpApril 26, 2008 - Meet at the yellow pole barn off of SR 39 at 9 AM. We welcome you to help clean up the NJC from the long winter. To celebrate Earth Day participants will be asked to help pick up litter at the NJC. We will finish around noon. Catch the Wind - Kite FlyingMay 3, 2008 - Bring your family and your kites and catch the wind at the NJC with other community members. Meet at the yellow pole barn at 10 AM. Migratory Bird Day HikeMay 10, 2008 - Bring your binoculars and a guide if you have one. We will be meeting at the picnic shelter on Conservation Drive at 8:30 AM and heading into the woods to see the birds living or visiting the NJC. |
